Myanmar Military Council to Convene Parliament in March, New Government Expected in April

YANGON — Myanmar’s military council plans to convene the newly formed parliament in March 2026, with a new government expected to take office by April, according to Major General Zaw Min Tun, spokesperson for the National Defense and Security Council.

The announcement was made on Sunday, January 11, as Senior General Min Aung Hlaing toured polling stations in Yangon during the second phase of the military-organized general election.

“The parliament will be convened in March, and the new government will begin its duties in April,” Zaw Min Tun told reporters, adding that the process follows the established electoral timeline used in previous cycles.

Political observers noted that this schedule mirrors the transition periods of past elections held in 2010, 2015, and 2020, where parliamentary sessions typically began in February followed by the formation of a new administration.

Speculation continues to mount regarding the future role of Senior General Min Aung Hlaing. Should he be nominated for the presidency by the new parliament and choose to accept the role, he would be required to appoint a new Commander-in-Chief of the Defense Services. This would mark the first appointment of a new military chief in 15 years, since Min Aung Hlaing was appointed to the position by former President Thein Sein in 2011.

The military’s transition plan proceeds despite widespread domestic opposition and international condemnation of the ongoing elections, which critics and human rights groups have dismissed as a “sham” designed to legitimize military rule.
