Trump Authorizes Military Strikes on Strategic Targets in Venezuela

WASHINGTON, D.C. — U.S. President Donald Trump has ordered military strikes against strategic targets and military installations across Venezuela, senior U.S. officials confirmed to CBS News on Saturday.

The military action began in the early hours of Jan. 3. Reports from the region indicate a series of powerful explosions occurred around 2:00 a.m. local time in the capital city of Caracas, as well as in the states of Miranda and Aragua.

While the full scale of the operation remains unclear, officials stated that the strikes were directed at specific military infrastructure. Local residents in Caracas reported hearing continuous blasts and seeing anti-aircraft fire over the city shortly after the operation began.

The White House has yet to issue a formal statement regarding the specific objectives or the duration of the engagement. The strikes mark a significant escalation in U.S. policy toward the South American nation following years of heightened diplomatic and economic tension.
